There is a widespread misperception that associates the phrases travel, vacation, and all-inclusive with gaining weight.

That does not always have to be the case. The secret to avoiding dietary and overall-health disasters when on vacation is to plan ahead of time. You don’t have to be overly rigid or deny yourself basic pleasures during your trip, but you also shouldn’t let it all go.

Travelling can be an excellent opportunity to reset your well-being clock and tune in to what your physical and mental health requires to function at its best. So, how can you stay healthy while on vacation? Here are five travel suggestions to help you enjoy your holiday while remaining mindful and healthy.

  1. Stick to your routine

Plan a routine for your vacation and stick to it. When you’re on vacation, it can be tempting to just let the day develop and toss the calendar out the window. Having a routine comparable to what you do at home, on the other hand, can help you stick to healthy behaviours while travelling. If you adopt better habits while on vacation, it will be easier to maintain such practices after you return home.

  1. Keep your meals simple

While on vacation, all-you-can-eat buffets and eating vacation food such as eggs, bacon, buttered toast, and the works instead of your typical home foods can be tempting. For the first meal of the day, fill up on the endless fruit options available to you. Eating fruit first thing in the morning is beneficial for your digestive system and provides your body with a healthy start to the day ahead, allowing you to make healthier choices throughout the day. Create a balance of what you know is a healthier choice, and enjoy minimally what it is you’re really craving.

  1. Ditch the bubbly drinks

If there is one item you should avoid, it is soda. Even calorie-free alternatives are laden with phoney chemicals to make them taste “wonderful” and give you the illusion of being full for the time being. Sodas and other drinks that come with those fancy little straws can be high in calories, easily equaling a full meal. Choose water with fresh fruit, and seltzer if you want some fizz or a single good glass of wine at dinner.

  1. Stay active

Guests at most hotels and resorts have access to a gym or workout alternatives. Even if you don’t, you can go for a lengthy walk on the beach, in the city, or work out in your hotel room. There are numerous choices if you commit to some form of exercising every day! If you’re used to a lengthier workout at home, don’t let the prospect of a shorter one on vacation deter you. A 30-minute walk on the beach might quickly evolve into an hour-long excursion or practice session. Alternatively, a shorter workout may be all your body needs for the day. After all, a little something is better than nothing!

  1. Get quality sleep

Leave the alarm clock at home and sleep until your body spontaneously awakens. This is an excellent activity for determining your personal sleep requirements when on vacation. If you have difficulties sleeping, request a quieter room. Also, avoid eating or drinking too close to bedtime (at least 2-3 hours before) and restrict alcohol consumption before going to bed. Bring earplugs, an eye mask, and other tools to help you sleep comfortably if you’re a light sleeper.
