Wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha, has called on women, especially nursing mothers to ensure their babies are exclusively breastfeed for the first six months.
She said this practice would enhance the health and well-being of the babies.
Mrs Buhari gave the advice on Saturday at the Bwari General Hospital, when she received the first baby of the year in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
She was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on African First Ladies Peace Mission Dr Mairo Al-Makura.
The First Lady noted that six-month exclusive breastfeeding was essential to boosting the immune system of the babies, hence the need for nursing mothers to adhere.
She also stressed the need for them to always visit hospitals for their antenatal and postnatal care to guard their babies from challenges associated with maternal and child mortality.
Mrs Buhari also appealed to nursing mothers to always maintain basic sanitation and hygiene to ensure their healthy living.
She used the occasion to remind stakeholders on the need to advance the course of protecting women and children from all forms of abuse in the society.
While welcoming the first baby of the year 2022, the first lady thanked the organisers of the event, especially Federal Ministry of Women Affairs for their support to women and children in the country.
