Cooley Dickinson Hospital earns top award

NORTHAMPTON — Highlighting its nationally recognized achievements in patient safety and quality, Cooley Dickinson was named a Top General Hospital nationally by The Leapfrog Group. Cooley Dickinson Hospital is among six hospitals in Massachusetts and the only hospital in western Massachusetts to earn this distinction.

The award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive. The Leapfrog Group is a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers and is recognized as the toughest standard-setters for health care safety and quality.

Over 2,200 hospitals were considered for the award. Among those, CDH received a Top General Hospital distinction. A total of 149 top hospitals nationwide were selected as Top Hospitals, including 72 for Top Teaching, 46 for Top General, 23 for Top Rural and eight for Top Children’s.

The quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, surgery, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication and other errors.

United Way adds four staff members

NORTHAMPTON — United Way of the Franklin & Hampshire Region has added four new members to its staff team. The new hires will augment the organization with their combined experience in leadership, education, marketing, donor relations, database management, and accounting.

The new employees include Jenny Coeur of Greenfield, who will serve as United Way’s program coordinator; Jenna Farrell of Easthampton, as donor relations manager; Jennifer Nhong of Belchertown, as database assistant; and Cathy Zimmerman of Chicopee, as the organization’s bookkeeper.

Coeur, who began her work at United Way in mid-July, was previously a teacher and math department chair at Applewild School in Fitchburg. She has 13 years’ experience in public and independent education as a community-focused teacher, program developer and coordinator, and department chair. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Hampshire College and a master of education from the UMass Amherst.

Farrell took on her role as donor relations manager in mid-September and will apply the experience she gained in the nonprofit world at UMass Amherst, and skills she honed while working for for-profits in marketing and events management. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Western New England University.

Nhong started in her new role in early October and will help manage United Way’s database. She worked for 13 years at MicroTek, a nonprofit cable manufacturing company in Chicopee in production, quality, and planning and management.

Zimmerman, United Way’s bookkeeper, has worked as an accountant for Temp-Pro, Argotec, Sisters of Providence and Holyoke Hospital. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Elms College. Zimmerman began her new role in early October and is excited to learn United Way’s accounting programs and systems.
