HARPER, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man was shot and injured by a police officer after a struggle over a knife, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said Saturday.
Kenneth Smith, 61, was shot Friday by a Harper police officer at an apartment complex. He underwent surgery and was in good and stable condition, the KBI said.
The officer responded to the apartment complex after police received a report of a man damaging property at an apartment complex in Harper, which is about 50 miles southwest of Wichita.
Smith was holding a knife and struggled with the officer, who sprayed Smith with pepper spray, according to a preliminary report.
Smith was shot once in the arm when he advanced toward the officer with the knife, the KBI said.
The officer backed out of the apartment and Smith barricaded himself inside. Harper police officers and Harper County Sheriff’s deputies forced their way back into the apartment and struggled with Smith again before subduing him.
No law enforcement officers were injured.
