SILVER CREEK — Vigo Meyer, the Silver Creek school student who is currently suffering from astrocytoma, a type of cancer that occurs in the brain, will have a fundraiser held on his behalf on Monday, Feb. 14.
This fundraiser, put on by Silver Creek Central school, will include a multitude of things, beginning with an Italian Night Dinner. The dinner, presented by the Key Club, will be from 3 to 6 p.m. at Silver Creek High School, and will cost $10 for either spaghetti and meatball or fettuccine alfredo.
But the fundraiser doesn’t stop at the dinner. Both boys junior varsity and varsity basketball teams are also playing that night, with JV tipping off at 6 p.m. and varsity following at 7:30. These games will also work into the fundraiser for Vigo, as there will be a 50-50 raffle and a basket raffle held during the games. Raffle tickets cost between $5 and $20, and winners will be drawn before the end of the Varsity game.
Vigo’s mom, Jill Meyer, said she’s thankful for how the school and community have been through the whole process, and Vigo himself agreed that the support has definitely helped him. “With all the support I’m getting, I feel pretty fine,” he said. “I’m probably going to be OK.”
Those attending the basketball games are encouraged to wear yellow and gray in support of Vigo, which is a gesture that Silver Creek Central School has already made to Meyer a few weeks ago.
It’s been a battle for Meyer so far throughout this process. He was originally diagnosed with the brain tumor back in early December, and was scheduled for surgery that was canceled at the last minute due to how much the tumor had grown between the diagnosis and the surgery date. Now, he has to undergo weeks of chemotherapy to shrink the tumor before going in for surgery again.
Jill Meyer is very public with Vigo’s battle. She operates a Facebook page which she updates regularly, detailing how his condition is going. Meyer feels it’s important to share this information as somewhat of a cautionary tale, and to let the community know how Vigo is doing in real time.
“I feel like people need to know that cancer has a face,” said Meyer. “I have a Facebook where I update how Vigo is doing every day and I know that there are people reading the daily posts to their children. We have the information out there and I think that’s important. I don’t conceal a lot through Facebook, I just tell it how it is.”
All proceeds from both events will go toward Vigo and his family, and additional monetary donations are also being accepted. On top of that, Meyer has a GoFundMe set up to accept donations as well.
